Julie Chen was born on January 6, 1970 in Queens, New York City. She did her Junior High School in Whitestone, Queens. She completed her graduation from St. Francis Preparatory School in 1987.

For further studies to become a graduate in Broadcast Journalism and English, she attended the University of Souther California in 1991.

Julie Chen is the daughter of Wan Ling Chen and David Y Chen who are Chinese immigrants. She has two elder sisters, Gladys and Victoria.

She started as an intern in June 1990 with CBS Morning News along with Andy Cohen. As an intern she used to answer phone calls and copy faxes for distribution. She also worked for ABC NewsOne as a Desk Assistant while was a student. Later on she got promotion as a producer and she work for next three years.

In 1995, she came to Dayton, Ohio and work as a news anchor for WDTN-TV for another 2 years. She had also undergone a surgical procedure called blepharoplasty to make her eyes appear larger.

From 1999 to 2002, Chen worked as an anchor for CBS Morning News, CBS This Morning and The Early Show alongside Jane Clayson, Maggie Rodriguez, Erica Hill and Rene Syler, Bryant Gumbel, Hannah Storm, Harry Smith. In the year 2000, she also hosted the American version of Big Brother.

She was a co-host with The Early Show on CBS till 2010. Before working with CBS News she was a reported and weekend anchor at WCBS-TV in New York City. She was also seen in TV shows such as Life in Pieces, The Young and the Restless, Supergirl, The Comeback, The Millers, The Unit, Yes, Dear, Veronica Mars.


Julie Chen is married to Leslie Moonves, the President and CEO of CBS Television. The marriage took place in Acapulco, Mexico on Dec 23, 2004 in the presence of few close friends and family members.
